Got it from the net . . . . . .
*****************************************

I am happy to report that the PS3 consumes no more than about 200W while folding, with a Power Factor of 0.99. This is the same peak we saw from it during gameplay. Considering that the PS3 accounts for about 65% of Folding@Home’s current TFLOPS, yet only 13% of the total active processors, this should be considered yet another bragging point for the PS3 as a folding unit.

To give an idea of how much this might cost, my Watts-Up Pro estimates that the PS3 will consume about 138 KiloWatt Hours per month at this rate. The price of electricity varies widely around the world, but here in Hong Kong, I pay about $0.12 USD per KWh (after my normal power usage is accounted for). So to keep the PS3 folding 24/7, I will be paying about $16.56 extra on my power bill each month. If I still lived in Vancouver, where they have an abundant amount of hydroelectric power, the cost per KWh is a paltry $0.053 USD. This would mean an extra $7.30 every month to have the PS3 folding 24/7. A small price to pay considering how efficient the PS3 is at folding; at this rate, we may just get some good results from this project after all!
Now, can we have some good games please?

I'm glad they're folding, it is good for the project as a whole. Although at the same time, since we know most think they can ONLY fold for the PS3 team, it would be nice if they startredfolding their regular computers and realized that they could pop their PS3s to US (Of course). I don't wanna see them pass us up, but really, if we all went out and bought a PS3 to use for folding, how much more PPD would we get? what are our current TFLOPS? how much more PPD could we get if we each had a PS3 (assuming 65% increase)?

our average PPD right now is 80,563
if we each had a PS3 folding, that would go up by 52366 (65%)

that would be a total PPD of 132,929

Their avaerage righ now is 468,529 :(

the ppd is only about 1000 per unit even though it is doing tons more work than a pc can. Their team is about 2000 strong and almost all are active. They could kick our butts w/ patty melts if thats all they did.

robokev'll correct me if I'm wrong ??????

The ps3 is doing three wu's a day. One every eight hours at 287 points for 900~1000 points a day.

That is exactly the same as a dual core rig for ppd.

Something is seriously wrong with the way stanford is assigning points if the ps3 wu's are terabyte wu's and ours aren't.
If they are doing so much more work, the points should reflect that. ( Considering they are supposed to be 20~40 times faster). They are running the gpu client as well, which runs at 1,000 ppd, times 7 gpu's, equals 7,000 ppd.

Everyone would go out and buy a ps3 and stanfords work would be finished in 20 years instead of 100 years.

(If my name and our team name wasn't mud at the forum, I'd sure be asking why they allow such disparity in points allocation). 20~40 % increase in an ordinary wu would equal 2,000~4,000 ppd.

Don't forget, that a lot of ps3 folders consider folding a game ..... and they are beating everybody with their points. ( They don't understand, that they are only folding one type of protein). Unlike pc's that run windows, mac's, gpu's and linux and do a variety of protein types.

Mike: Pretty much but only the GPU is not used for folding on the PS3. Only the CPU is used. I'm not sure why but that's the way it is. I think it is pretty crappy too that the PS3 WU's are worth less than you would think but I guess they do that so as not to discourage other folders as Bob has said before. The PS3's are soo much more powerfull for folding and have much more potential but Stanford doesn't seem to be harnesing all of it right now. If they raised the points value even by 100 or so, I'm sure that would encourage more people to fold on them. I don't know, but it's almost as though Stanford id trying to discourage PS3 folding. no matter what, I'm still gonna fold my PS3 and try to catch up with some of you.
