I've gotten my scanner to work by using the command sudo xsane. Which is the only way I've gotten to work so far. (I am very happy that it works, BTW) The issues are, I'm doing it as root and when I save my pictures, I can't open them. When I try it says could not load image out.pnm. When I hit properties it says root owns it. Can I chown xsane? Or is there a better solution?

I wouldn't chown it

but what you can do is give permission for other's to use it

I "think" chmod 766 would work, but not sure. might be easier to just log in to X as root, and browse to the directory with xsane in it, and right click and allow others read access. that should work. Then the scanner is accessable to rtegular users but not writable (which would be bad anyway)

Here's what I did that seems to have worked. Would doing what you suggested be better?
I went to sys/admin/authorizations scrolled to device access clicked directly access scanner and under implicit authorizations I set anyone to amin authorization (keep indefinitely) and console to admin authorization (keep indefinitely).
Is this safe?
Also when I close the sane gui I get an error message "failed to create file, permission denied" which pops up three times. I think it's a bug. Even with the error it works fine now.
The last thing to work out is the scan quality, which on some things looks like the image has a staggered drop in it and small lettering isn't clear.
Thanks for the assist by the way! :D

That way should work fine, I'd assume that did exactly what i suggested (just with a click rather than command line). The error is probably from xsane trying to make a preferences or per user file in root's home folder (which under a normal user it doesn't have the right to do). unless it's losing your settings each time you stop/start it I wouldn't worry too much.

I KNOW somewhere in the www there is info on setting up xsane to run as a service with appropriate rights, it's just a matter of finding it. You might wanna ask over at the ubuntu forums about setting that up. I know in Fedora it's possible, so it should be possible in any linux distro.

Thanks! :D

Now if only I can get my version of quickbooks working under linux, I can dump windows forever.
Wine will do some versions but mine isn't listed.

P.S. what does the x stand for?

Is that what the x means for xsane?

no, lol
the X in Xsane means GUI basically. It's just a program that runs in a graphical context:P

the desktop server on a linux machine is called X. There are 2 main ones, Xorg, and Xfree.

Check this out for more info

I made a most embarrassing discovery this morning. Ubuntu puts the xsane scanner under graphics. I originally thought it had to be installed when I couldn't find it. All that work for nothing. I plugged my printer in to the laptop went to the scanner under xsane and it worked right out of the box. (All the previous work was on my desktop)  This OS keeps getting better and I get worse. Heh. Now if only they'll tie the scanner with the printer so they're in the same spot.
I sent myself on a snipe hunt.

just right click on the scanner, create a "launcher" on the desktop, and then do the same with the printer  then you'll have them both a click away
